Changes to UKVI rules for study visas: what international students need to know for 2025
From 2 January 2025, the UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) will implement important changes to the amounts required for proof of living expenses for international students. These changes are crucial for any student planning to study a course of over 6 months in the UK, as providing proof of funds is one of the key requirements when applying for a student visa.
What Were the Previous Requirements?
Starting in 2020, international students who want to study in London must provide proof of £1,334 per month for the duration of their course when applying for a student visa. In contrast, in other areas of the UK, the required amount is £1,023 per month. These amounts should be enough to cover living expenses for a minimum of nine months.
What Will Change in 2025?
Starting in January 2025, the amounts required will increase. Students living in London will now have to provide evidence of a monthly availability of £1,450, whereas for students heading to other regions of the UK, the stipulated amount will be £1,125 per month, for a minimum of nine months. This means that, besides tuition fees, students will need to show a higher balance in their bank accounts to cover their living expenses in the UK during their studies.
Documents Required to Prove Funds:
In order to present evidence of your funds, you will need to provide documents such as:
- Bank statements showing the required balance available in your account for at least 28 consecutive days; or
- A letter from the bank confirming the balance and its availability;
- Official scholarship letters (if applicable);
- Other financial documents proving your ability to cover living expenses during the course (if applicable).
Important: The bank account or savings account used to show funds must be under the student’s name or their parents/legal guardian’s name.
