8th March – International Women’s Day: A Tribute to Women in Education
On this 8th March, International Women’s Day, UK Student Solutions highlights this important milestone in the advancement of women’s rights.
Today, we reflect on the journeys of women who challenged barriers and fought for their rights, particularly the right to education. In Brazil and across the African continent, many historical women played a fundamental role in ensuring access to knowledge and transforming their communities.
One of the most prominent and powerful names in this fight is Nísia Floresta (1810-1885), considered by many to be Brazil’s first feminist. At a time when women had few opportunities to study, Nísia founded schools and wrote pioneering works advocating for women’s education.

Another inspiring example is Antonieta de Barros (1901-1952), a journalist, teacher, and the first Black woman elected as a congresswoman in Brazil. She dedicated her political career to fighting for equal access to education.
Across the Atlantic, on the African continent, figures like Graça Machel, a Mozambican activist for educational rights, stand out. As the First Lady of both Mozambique and South Africa, she has been a powerful advocate for children’s education and women’s empowerment.
Another remarkable personality is Malala Maiwand, an Afghan journalist who fought for women’s education, leaving a legacy that continues to resonate across Asia.
These women, and so many others, paved the way and continue to inspire new generations to fight for a more inclusive and equal education system, serving as references not only in their home countries but worldwide.

On this March 8th, may their voices echo as symbols of resilience and transformation. The fight is not over—it continues.
