From Angola to Studying Engineering in the USA: How a UK Foundation Programme Opened Global Opportunities
International education rarely follows a straight line.
For many students, the most successful academic journeys are not defined by a single destination, but by a pathway that crosses several countries and education systems along the way.
Adalberto’s story is a powerful example of this global journey.
Originally from Luanda, Angola, Adalberto began his international education experience in Cape Town, South Africa, where he first focused on improving his English language skills. This step was essential in preparing him for the next stage of his academic path.
From there, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he enrolled in the Advanced Level Foundation (ALF) in Engineering and Science at Kings Education in Bournemouth. The programme provided him with the academic preparation, subject knowledge, and study skills required to progress to a university-level engineering degree. This Kings programme is now called the Degree Preparation Program (DPP).
Today, Adalberto is studying Electrical Engineering at Miami University in Ohio, United States, while also pursuing a minor in Humanitarian Engineering and Computing, an interdisciplinary field that combines engineering solutions with social impact.
His journey illustrates how international education pathways can connect different education systems and open global opportunities, allowing students to build their academic experience step by step across different countries.
Several students see studying abroad as an opportunity to explore how diverse educational systems can work together, building a comprehensive, long-term academic trajectory.
From Angola to the United Kingdom
Adalberto grew up in Luanda, Angola, and from an early stage, he knew he wanted to pursue higher education abroad.
The United Kingdom became one of his options, as the country is widely recognised for its world-class universities and for offering well-established academic preparation routes for international students.
“I chose the UK because it has great universities, especially for engineering,” he explained.
Before beginning his studies, he had never been to England.
Many students considering studying abroad will discover that the United Kingdom offers structured academic routes designed to help them transition smoothly into university education.
These programs enable students educated internationally to transition from their home educational systems to meet the demands of global universities.
Adalberto attended the Advanced Level Foundation Programme in Science and Engineering at Kings Education Bournemouth, now known as the Degree Pathway Programme.
What is a Foundation Programme?
For students coming from an education system outside the United Kingdom, a Foundation Programme plays a crucial role as the academic bridge between secondary school and university studies. Also, because school systems around the world follow different curricula and assessment structures, universities often recommend, and many times require, their candidates to attend a Foundation Year to ensure they are fully prepared for the academic expectations of an international degree and global universities.
These programmes are specifically designed to help students:
- strengthen subject knowledge in key subjects within their chosen field
- develop academic English skills required for university-level study
- adapt to the teaching methods and expectations of international universities
- build the research, writing, and independent study habits required for degree-level education
For students planning careers in areas such as social sciences, engineering, medicine, business, or technology, this preparation is particularly valuable. The Foundation year allows them to consolidate essential academic skills while building confidence before moving on to a demanding university programme.

Why Many International Students Choose a UK Foundation Programme?
As we said, for students coming from education systems outside the United Kingdom, a Foundation programme is often the most effective pathway into international higher education.
Rather than moving directly from a national secondary school system into a university programme abroad, the Foundation Programme provides a structured transition that helps students adjust both academically and culturally.
During this period, students become familiar with the learning environment expected in international universities, including critical thinking, independent study, research methods, and collaborative projects.
Another advantage is the flexibility of the programmes. Many students progress to universities in the United Kingdom, others use this preparation as a stepping stone to higher education opportunities in other countries.
The academic training and international study experience gained during a Foundation can open doors to universities in the United States, Canada, and across Europe, for example.
For students like Adalberto, this step became the starting point of a truly global academic journey.

Life at Kings Education
Beyond academic preparation, studying abroad is also about personal development.
For Adalberto, some of his most memorable experiences at Kings Education happened outside the classroom. When he was asked about his favourite memories, he told us:
” I would say the recreational activities like playing football at Little Down, the prom was really nice and bonding with a lot of people who lived in the residence with me.”
Living alongside students from different countries helped him experience new cultures and build friendships that extended beyond academics.
These experiences often become an important part of the international student journey, helping students develop independence and intercultural awareness.
Moving to a U.S. university
After completing his Foundation Year in the UK, Adalberto continued his academic journey in the United States.
Today, he studies Electrical Engineering at Miami University in Ohio, while also pursuing a minor in Humanitarian Engineering and Computing.
For many students, pursuing an engineering degree abroad means experiencing different academic cultures and opportunities.
He highlights the supportive environment and campus life as some aspects he appreciates most about his current university.
“The people are really nice, and the university offers many options for recreational sports.”
Sports have always been an important part of his life.
“I love doing sports because it is the way I found to stay active and motivated. I would say that my interest in sports started when I was a child. I had so much energy, and I tried a couple of different sports to keep me busy.”
His preparation through the Foundation Programme
The transition from Foundation studies to university-level engineering is challenging, but Adalberto believes his experience in the UK prepared him well.
” At Kings I have developed a sense of independent study and an ability to work under pressure, and this is basically a daily routine for engineering students.”
This preparation helped him adapt more quickly to the academic expectations of university life.
A Foundation programme builds the academic confidence needed for thriving in demanding university environments abroad.
International Pathways and Global Academic Routes
Adalberto’s journey reflects a broader shift in international education pathways.
Today, several students choose to begin their studies in one country and continue their academic progression in another. Structured programmes, such as foundation courses, help build bridges between different education systems.
International pathways can connect multiple destinations and academic systems.
In recent articles on our blog, we explored how medical studies in Eastern Europe, specialised Medical English preparation, and international summer academic programmes are becoming part of these global education routes.
Stories like Adalberto’s highlight how international education is becoming increasingly interconnected, allowing students to build academic journeys that span different countries and education systems while aligning with their long-term goals.
At UK Student Solutions, we help students and families understand these global pathways and plan international education journeys with clarity and a long-term perspective.
Planning Your Own International Study Pathway
Every student’s journey is unique.
The students start with a Foundation programmes in the UK. Some of them move on to undergraduate degrees in the UK and other students choose to continue their studies in other countries. Some students prefer to explore international summer programmes before making long-term academic decisions.
What often makes the difference is understanding how these options connect and how each step can contribute to a broader academic and professional plan.
Our aim at UK Student Solutions is to provide students and families with a clear, long-term vision for navigating global education opportunities, ensuring every phase of their academic journey contributes to their future objectives.
If you are exploring similar possibilities, you can schedule an initial consultation with UK Student Solutions to review your academic goals and identify possible international routes.
Building a Global Academic Journey
Adalberto’s experience is a reminder that studying abroad is not only about choosing a destination.
It is about building a pathway that combines academic preparation, international exposure, and long-term career ambitions.
For students considering international education, understanding how these pathways work can make the difference between simply studying abroad and creating a truly global academic journey.
Beyond academic achievement, international exposure is increasingly valued in today’s job market. Studying in different countries helps students develop skills such as adaptability, independence, and intercultural communication, making their profile more competitive and better prepared for global opportunities. In a world without borders, those who build global experiences today are the ones best prepared to lead tomorrow.
