I am going to study in the UK. Can I bring my family? Check the new UK rules about bringing dependants during your studies!
International students and dependants in the UK
As education consultants assisting international students planning to study in the UK, we are frequently asked about the possibility of bringing dependants—spouses and children—during the study period. This is one of the most common questions from applicants who contact UK Student Solutions, as planning for their family’s stay or relocation is very important when considering studying abroad. With the UKVI (UK Visas & Immigration) rules that came into effect in 2024, significant changes have been implemented. If you are considering studying in the UK for a while and wish to bring your family, it is essential to understand these new regulations to plan your journey accordingly.
What has changed?
From January 2024, the UK government has changed the conditions for granting dependant visas. Previously, students enrolled in postgraduate courses (Master’s and PhD) could bring their spouses and children as dependants to their visas. However, the new rules have restricted this possibility.
Now, issuing dependant visas is limited to students enrolled in PhD (Doctorate) programmes or research programmes considered to be of “high value” at universities recognised by the UK government. This includes courses in strategic fields for the UK, such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and advanced research programmes.
Who can still bring dependants?
Currently, the following students can bring dependants:
- Students enrolled in a PhD or another doctorate (Level 8).
- Students enrolled in long-term research programmes.
- Students holding government scholarships (from the UK or elsewhere) that specifically cover dependents.
If you are enrolled in an undergraduate course (Bachelor’s) or a Master’s degree that does not fall under the UKVI criteria, you will not be able to bring your dependants.
What are the requirements for dependants?
For those who qualify to bring family members, dependants must:
- Be a spouse, civil partner, or cohabiting partner registered for more than two years.
- Be a child under 18 years old.
- Demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support themselves in the UK without access to public benefits.
The minimum financial requirement per dependant varies depending on the university’s location. In London, students must prove at least £845 per month available per dependant, for the academic year. Outside of London, this amount drops to £680 per month.
If I am coming for a short course, am I allowed to bring my spouse or children?
For students coming to the UK for short courses (lasting up to 11 months, such as language courses or short-term specialisations), dependants are not permitted as part of the student visa. The visitor visa or short-term study visa does not include the option of accompanying family members.
If a student wishes for their spouse or children to join them, they must apply for a separate visitor visa, which is subject to UKVI rules, including proof of financial means and intent to return to their home country after the permitted period.
What does this mean for international students?
If you wish to study in the UK and bring your family, it is crucial to plan ahead. Some key recommendations include:
- Choosing the right course: If having your family with you is a priority, check whether your course meets UKVI’s eligibility criteria.
- Calculating costs: Beyond tuition fees, consider accommodation, food, and healthcare expenses for your dependants.
- Seeking expert support: Companies like UK Student Solutions Ltd can help you understand the options available and find the best strategy for your situation. Our team can assess whether your chosen programme complies with current regulations and what your best alternatives are.
Proper research and planning are essential to avoid unexpected challenges during your academic journey. At UK Student Solutions, we specialise in education and student visas, and we are here to guide you through every step of the process. However, if you are considering immigration or residence visa options for work in specific professions, we recommend seeking immigration specialists or legal advisers for support.
Summer programmes for families
On the other hand, UK Student Solutions has partnerships with summer programmes for families who wish not only to travel but also to make the most of the time by learning the language. These programmes allow parents to bring their children so that everyone can have an enriching educational experience during the holidays. A last word of encouragement
If you cannot bring your dependants, do not give up or be discouraged! Most Master’s courses in the UK take only one year to complete, allowing students to fully focus on their studies and return to their families with new opportunities and qualifications that will undoubtedly benefit their loved ones. While it may seem like a sacrifice to be away from your family, this period of academic and professional development will bring long-term rewards. Remember, in professional life, we often encounter similar situations where we must be away from loved ones to complete important tasks.
